Esther Benaly [According to her Great-grandmother's story]

The story began when there was starvation among the Navajos. Staple of foods such as flour and coffee were not available during that time. Mormon tea, lesperma-garcile, Mormon tea root were used for coffee. Seeds were gathered in large goat skins which had been sewn together. The skin was spread underneath a seed bush. Then the bush was hit with a stick so that the seeds would fall onto the skin. After the seeds were gathered, grinding stone was used to grind them, and they were boiled in clay pots on stone grills. Yucca bananas, and sumac were other sources of food found only in the mountains.
